Medical college teachers call off stir

January 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:58 am IST - KOCHI:

The teachers at the Government Medical College, Ernakulam, have withdrawn the academic boycott that was on for the past two weeks. The decision was taken after the government gave a written assurance that 348 posts would be created within two weeks as part of the first step in integrating the staff with the government.

Representatives of the Cochin Medical College Teachers’ Association (CMCTA) had met the Director, Medical Education, in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, who handed over the letter of assurance from N. B. Balakrishnan, Deputy Secretary.

The letter said, “the process of creating 148 faculty posts and 202 non-teaching posts for the medical college is progressing”.

Meanwhile, the students of the medical college on Friday picketed the administrative block at the medical college at Kalamassery as part of their protest against the academic boycott and the Government approach towards the college.

No staff or doctor was allowed to enter the administrative block to register their presence in the biometric machine.
