The Government Medical College, Ernakulam, is facing a severe financial crisis. There are no funds for the day-to-day functioning of the college.
The Head of Accounts for the medical college has only funds under the wages account that would suffice for paying salaries for the next two months, according to the medical college sources.
There are no funds to get any repair works done or any new small purchase for the medical college and hospital functioning.
Even the ambulance at the medical college would not ply now because of lack of funds to buy diesel, said one of the employees in the hospital.
The hospital functioning has been saved as the Hospital Development Society has powers to sanction up to Rs.21 lakh.
All the funds to run the government schemes also come to this account.
So the hospital functioning would not be affected for about three-four months, said a senior official in the medical college.
The fund for paying salaries were provided by re-appropriating the funds of other government medical colleges, said a senior employee.
