Waste, including plastic, being burnt allegedly on the Government Medical College premises.

KOCHI: People living near the Government Medical College, Ernakulam, have alleged that the medical college authorities are burning waste inside the campus since the incinerator at the institution has been out of order for the past six months.

However, refuting the charge, Principal V. K. Sreekala, told The Hindu that while the medical waste was being carried away by IMAGE for the past six months at a cost of ₹3.5 per bed per day, the college was giving away food waste to a pig farm. The medical college had also given a contract for taking away the plastic waste generated here, she said.

An incinerator was under construction and till it got operational, the present arrangement would continue, she said.

Dr. Sreekala said she had no knowledge of any waste being burnt on the college premises.

It was alleged that garbage, including plastic waste, was being burnt at the area marked for the Cochin Cancer Research Centre.
