LDF councillors staging a protest demanding steps to control mosquito menace by sitting inside a mosquito net at the Kochi Corporation office on Wednesday.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) councillors of the Kochi Corporation presented a mosquito net to Mayor Soumini Jain after staging a protest inside a mosquito net in front of the Corporation office, demanding steps for controlling the pest attack.

The councillors accused the civic administration of failing to initiate steps on time for checking mosquito menace.

The delay in pressing into action vehicles fitted with fogging machines and ensuring adequate quantity of larvicides worsened the situation. The apathy of the civic administrators contributed to the increased mosquito attack in the city, said a statement issued by LDF leader V.P. Chandran.

The councillors also draped the chair of the Mayor with a mosquito net.

K.J. Antony, the CPI(M) leader in the council, inaugurated the agitation. Poornima Narayanan, chairperson of the Education Standing Committee of the local body, P.N. Seenulal, CPI(M) Ernakulam area secretary and LDF councillors Benedict Fernandaz, Jimini, K.J. Baisal, Jayanthi Premnath, Sheeba Lal and O.P. Sunil spoke.
