The monsoon that wreaked havoc and caused unprecedented flooding for three days since Sunday has caused a loss worth Rs. 19.53 crore in the district.
The rains has also claimed seven lives. Incessant rain that forced authorities to open up dam shutters proved disastrous to crops and properties. Flooding affected 46 villages spread over six taluks.
Crop loss on 374 hectares alone is estimated at Rs. 4.52 crore. Rehabilitation camps opened in various taluks shelter 29,043 people. Ninety-six houses have been permanently damaged and 183 houses partially, accounting for a loss worth Rs. 2.30 crore. KSEB suffered a loss of Rs. 3.94 crore while minor and major irrigation departments’ losses have been estimated at Rs. 75 lakh and 6.25 crore respectively.
Damage to roads, which were already in a bad shape, accounted for Rs. 1 crore-worth of loss. The loss to Periyar Valley Irrigation Project is worth Rs. 1.73 crore. Numerous wells have been left useless after getting washed up with mud inflicting a loss of Rs. 5.60 lakh.
The administration has been supplying drinking water in tankers in areas marooned.
