The Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering is setting its own standards in marine engineering training in the country by achieving 100 per cent placement for its students.
The fifth batch of 30 students, who formally passed out of the School on Tuesday, has had 31 job offers, said the Director of the School K. A. Simon.
Companies that have absorbed the alumni of KM School include K-Line, Japan; American Presidental Lines, Singapore; Mediterranean Shipping Company and Orient Express Ship Management, both based out of Mumbai.
The achievement by the KM School stands out because of the economic scenario in which global shipping business operates now.
The volume of cargo moved through major ports in the country has come down considerably and shipping lines are going through a grim phase in terms of business.
Director General of Shipping Deepak Shetty, who was the chief guest at the passing out ceremony on Tuesday, lauded the efforts made by KM School, the only marine engineering training institute offering a B.Tech degree in the country under a state government.
Mr. Shetty said that the directorate general was keeping a watch over the quality of maritime training in the country and picked out the KM School for its excellent standards. Dr. Simon said that the course being offered by the KM School conformed to the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping 95 Convention and was approved by the Directorate General of Shipping and All India Council for Technical Education. One of the key features of the course at the KM School is the Ship-In-Campus and Full Mission Engine Room Simulator Laboratory, the former providing the mandatory afloat training of students.
