A preliminary probe by the city police into the mysterious murder of a woman and the suicide of her live-in partner in Ponekkara on Friday suggested that the woman was murdered by her partner on suspicion of her being in another relationship.

The woman, Meera of Kottayam, was found dead lying in a pool of blood. The body was naked. Noufal was found hanging from the ceiling fan next to the body. The duo had come to Ponekkara about a month ago and took a house on rent as a couple.

According to the police, the mother of Noufal called up them to inform that her son had killed a woman. “Noufal called up his mother and told her that he had killed the woman and was going to commit suicide,” officials said.

Noufal had landed in police custody about a month ago after his wife in Palakkad complained of domestic violence, they added.

Meanwhile, the investigation has been handed over to Kalamassery Circle Inspector S. Jayakrishnan. The inquest and post-mortem were carried out on Saturday morning.

The woman was lying in a pool of blood inside the house with a kitchen knife next to the body. Examinations revealed that she sustained stab wounds on her neck, shoulders and abdomen. The police are now investigating the exact motive behind the crime including whether a third person was involved in it.
