The development plan for the Kochi city region, covering the corporation and five adjoining municipalities and ten panchayats, set to be finalised this November proposes a string of major roads for easing the traffic congestion.
A major proposal is to develop the Container Terminal Road as a 45-metre-wide road for exclusive movement of containers from Vallarpadam to the northern side. Equally significant would be a link road, the alignment of which would be decided only after detailed studies, proposed from the Container Terminal road to link it with NH 47 at a point beyond Angamaly so as to reduce the congestion in the Kochi city region. The plan proposes to utilise inland water ways for container movement towards the southern side.
A 27-metre-wide road linking old NH at Edakochi and NH 47 at Kumbalam has been proposed to increase the connectivity from Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, Chellanam, and Kumbalanghi area to the new proposed transit oriented development corridor.
SmartCity roadA new road, named SmartCity road, connecting major potential job centres in the eastern side of the Kochi city region such as Kalamassery, Thrikkakara, Vadavucode and Puthencruz is another proposal. This 27-metre-wide road from HMT road at Kalamassery to NH 49 at Puthencruz would also link up these development centres with the airport through NH 47.
Another 22-metre-wide link road connecting NH 47 bypass and the SmartCity Road has been proposed as an extension from Thammanam-Pulleppady road.
The existing Seaport-Airport Road has been proposed to be widened as a 45-metre road extending from Irumbanam junction and connecting to the proposed NH 49 bypass.
A 22-metre-wide link road connecting NH 47 bypass at Madavana junction in Maradu and Kaloor-Kadavanthra road has been proposed. Another link road proposed connects Kochi-Chellanam-Alappuzha road and Kumbalanghi road.
In addition, roads of appropriate widths connecting the 11 planning divisions have also found a mention in the plan. The plan divides the 16 local bodies that it covers into 11 planning division for precision planning and development.
