Lung cancer tops the list of cancer deaths reported in the district. While breast and oral cancer deaths take the second and third spots, breast cancer cases are the most reported among all cancers in the district.
In 2015, 110 (99 males) died of lung cancer compared to 86 (77 males) in 2014. In 2014, 42 (41 females) breast cancer deaths were reported against 35 such deaths in 2015.
The number of oral cancer deaths reported was 35 (32 males) in 2015 against 33 (28 males) in 2014. The total numbers of various cancer deaths reported were 326 in 2015 against 348 cases in 2014.
Deputy District Medical Officer Dr. Vidya told The Hindu that the data on cancer deaths had been collected by the field workers in the district. There were chances of missing out on some of the cancer deaths that could have happened in private institutions. The survey is still on for collecting details of cancer patients taking treatment in government institutions, she said.
The government institutions in the district reported 3,674 cases of cancers in 2015 against 4,844 in 2014. Of the total cases of cancer reported in government institutions, breast cancer topped the list in both the years with 721 cases in 2015 and 950 in 2014. There were also 441 cases of breast cancer that were referred from other centres in 2015 while in 2014, there were 248 such cases. 646 lung cancer cases were reported in 2015 against 867 in 2014. There were also 297 referred cases in IP in 2015 against 477 in 2014.
Among cardio-vascular disease deaths reported in government hospitals, there were 16 cases of deaths caused by hypertension in 2015 against 35 deaths in 2014. Ischemic heart disease caused 8 deaths in 2015 against 29 deaths in 2014.
However, there is no comprehensive data on cardio-vascular disease deaths in the district.
