Lawyers thrash policeman in Cherthala

November 20, 2009 08:17 pm | Updated 08:17 pm IST - ALAPPUZHA:

A police driver was allegedly thrashed by lawyers at the Court Complex in Cherthala near here on Friday, following which the police has registered a case against three lawyers citing non-bailable charges.

According to the Cherthala police, there was an order from the sub-judge asking the police to remove vehicles that were parked inside the court complex and obstructing traffic. At 3.30 p.m., two policemen, along with another policeman on court duty, started removing the vehicles, which were parked there by lawyers who arrived to attend a general body meeting of the Cherthala Bar Association.

Police said that a lawyer objected to his two-wheeler being removed, following which there was an argument. The argument snowballed into fistcuffs and the policeman, Nawaz (33), suffered injuries apart from his uniform being torn. A reporter, who was on the spot, was also allegedly manhandled and his mobile phone snatched from him.

The situation was brought under control after a police team headed by Cherthala sub-inspector Anil Kumar, reached the spot and shifted the injured policeman to the Cherthala Taluk Hospital. A case with non-bailable charges has been registered against three lawyers Dhanesh, Sudheer and Kannan. Obstructing discharge of a policeman’s duty is also among the charges, police said.

However, lawyers have alleged that the policeman abused them, which was how the argument began. The Bar Association has also lodged a complaint with the court, asking for action against the police.
