The High Court on Thursday granted six more months to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to complete its probe into the two land grab cases in which Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s former gunman Salim Raj is allegedly involved.
Justice P. Ubaid issued the order on a petition filed by the CBI seeking time. In its petition, the CBI said the nine-month deadline set by the court had expired on January 24. The probe entailed a widespread operation, in view of the involvement of officers of the highest level and the enormity of funds raised for the purchase of land in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. The CBI said the financial sources and the persons who had funded the deals had to be identified.
The complainant, N.A. Shereefa, contended that the investigation was being deliberately delayed to allow influential people to escape or destroy evidence.
