Land for airport: court seeks State response

January 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:53 am IST - KOCHI:

The Kerala High Court on Friday asked the State government to respond to a writ petition challenging the handing over of 257 hectares of land by KINFRA to Kannur International Airport Limited for the proposed airport.

The petition was filed by One Earth One Life. The petitioner said 439.5738 hectares had been acquired by the government and 251.2987 hectares had been transferred to the airport company without any written documents regarding the title transfer. The land had later been given to Larson and Toubro for development of the airport. The petitioner pointed out that the land had been granted without collecting lease rent or without any royalty. The land was being developed without even conducting any environment impact assessment study.

The petitioner sought a directive to restrain Larson and Toubro from quarrying and removing the soil without paying royalty or rent and also without conducting an environment impact assessment study.
