Delay in acquiring seven more acres of land for Kochi Metro will have marginal impact on construction of stations, though it has affected construction schedule of the metro’s viaducts at many places.

Sources associated with the project said piling was over for 14 of the 21 stations proposed in the Aluva-Pettah alignment. Pile capping work is getting over for most of the 12 stations in metro’s Aluva-Palarivattom reach, while work on pillars has begun for a few.

In the Palarivattom-Pettah reach where land acquisition problems abound, DMRC has completed piling for four stations and pile capping work is in progress.

Delay by KWA in relocating pipelines is hampering work on metro stations planned at Kadavanthra and Elamkulam on SA Road, while PWD’s inability to widen Vyttila-Pettah Road has prevented commencement of work on other stations.

“Metro stations are located on the viaduct itself and land is required on either side only to house staircase, escalator and lift for commuters to enter and exit the stations,” sources said.

Station specifications Unlike a pillar every 25 metres for the metro, pillars for stations will be located at a distance of every 13.50 metres.

Every 81-metre-long station capable of berthing 70-metre-long metro trains will be supported by seven pillars.

“The platform on each side will be 3 metres wide and will have a total area of 210 square metres. Approximately three people can stand in every square metre of space and this works out to around 600 people on each side. Others will wait in the concourse, to prevent stampede. Crowding will be rare since trains travel at intervals ranging from five minutes to 90 seconds, depending on demand,” sources said.
