Container movement at the DP World-operated International Container Transshipment Terminal has come to a standstill after contract labourers involved in moving containers to and from the yard, numbering around 100, went on a strike from late afternoon on Monday.
A spokesman for Swathanthra Container Lorry Thozhilali Union and Cochin Port Staff Union, representing ATV drivers involved in moving the cargo containers, said that the contract workers had been denied their instalment of bonus ahead of Christmas.
DP World sources confirmed that container movement had been stopped with the strike being launched. The striking workers said that the contractors had refused to pay the bonus, which was due on December 20. The bonus is agreed upon and is part of the agreement.
