February 22, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - KOCHI:

Coordinated efforts by elected representatives, officials and the public will ensure the comprehensive development of villages, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.

He was speaking here on Saturday after K.V. Thomas, MP, adopted Kottuvally grama panchayat under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY).

The Chief Minister said the effective implementation of SAGY would prove beneficial to the villages. “The declaration of SAGY alone is not going to serve the purpose. For this, we need cooperation from all sides,” Mr. Chandy added.

According to him, the implementation of SAGY would help address various issues faced by the villages. He also hoped that the programme would get a higher allocation in the upcoming Union Budget.

Mr. Thomas, who elaborated on the project, said that it involved four major schemes – Harithagramam, Muttagramam, Shuchitwagramam and Samboornarogyagramam.

Harithagramam envisages distribution of tree saplings to each of the families with the assistance of the Forest Department.

The Muttagramam programme, which aims at making the village self-sufficient in egg production, to be initiated with assistance from the Bharat Sevak Samaj and the State Poultry Development Corporation, envisages extending a financial assistance of Rs. 15,000 per family.

The eggs to be produced under the project will be procured by the Bharat Sevak Samaj. Biogas plants and compost buckets will be distributed under the Shuchitwgramam scheme while the Samboornarogyagramam aims at checking lifestyle diseases.

V.D. Satheesan, MLA, presided over the function. Additional District Magistrate B. Ramachandran, Chief Conservator of Forests B.S. Kori, Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard K. Subramaniam and Kochi refinery executive director Somasekharan were among those who attended the function.
