Thrikkakara is turning out to be a sought after residential area with its rising profile as an Information Technology hub and its accompanying workforce

Thrikkakara municipality has come up with a proposal to make things easier for those who have trouble finding able and reliable domestic help. The municipality is planning a project to set up house cleaning units, with the support of Kudumbasree members.

A project report is being prepared. Once finalised, it would be placed before the District Planning Committee for its approval, sources said. The proposal will be implemented this financial year itself.

The proposal envisages a major role for the members of Kudumbasree in running the units. The proposal was well received by the Kudumbasree Mission as it opens up another source of revenue for its members, sources said. The municipality was one of the first to engage Kudumbasree workers to clean public spaces.

Shortage of help

To begin with, a single unit composed of about 10 members will be set up. More such units will be started later if the project catches on.

Thrikkakara is turning out to be a sought after residential area with its rising profile as an Information Technology hub and its accompanying workforce. While new apartments and flats are springing up in the area, there is an acute shortage of domestic help, sources said.

Once up and running, the proposed cleaning units will take orders for cleaning houses and residential compounds.

Cleaning work will be done in a professional manner using modern equipment.

The municipality has set apart Rs.2.5 lakh for launching the project. A major chunk of this fund will go into buying the necessary equipment.

Rates yet to be fixed

The rates for cleaning assignments are yet to be worked out.

Such points will be discussed once the project report is finalised and receives the approval of the district planning committee. Rates could be fixed per square feet after taking into consideration the cost factors such as the remuneration of the members engaged, sources said.

Once the cleaning units are well established, the possibility of expanding their service to other household chores will also be considered.
