The district’s IT showpiece, Kakkanad, continues to suffer from shoddy waste management.
The president of Thrikkakara municipality P. I. Mohammedali said the situation on the waste management front had improved considerably in the municipal area though heaps of waste are eyesore in some of the busiest areas such as the NGO quarters.
Thrikkakara Residents’ Association president M.S Anilkumar said the municipality should take the lead in managing waste. But it hadn’t done so either because the they didn't have the expertise or the will.
Former president of Thrikkakara Residents’ Association Salim Kunnumpuram said waste management continued to be a major problem in the municipal area despite repeated attempts by the residents’ associations to pressure the authorities to find a lasting solution.
Mr. Mohammedali said waste from the municipality was being handled better than before and a plastic grinding unit would be commissioned soon near the municipal office.
The unit is being set up at a cost of Rs. 20 lakh and will solve the problem of polythene carry-bags that have accumulated at the waste dumping yard.
Apart from garbage, the municipality also has an excess of something else: vehicles.
Rising traffic levels lead to frequent congestion during peak hours on the roads here. The traffic situation does not appear to be in for an immediate solution as several new road projects are pending both with the Public Works Department and with the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala.
Sources in the PWD said two road projects had been entrusted to it to take care of the traffic moving into and away from Infopark, the IT hub of the district. The ambitious SmartCity project is coming up in close vicinity of the IT hub.
The two roads, both linking Infopark to the eastern wings of the district, have been pending and no budget allocation had been made so far for the roads.
The first road project is the one that starts at InfoPark and moves to Puthenkurisu via Brahmapuram. The other road project will link InfoPark with Pattimattam via Kummanodu.
A proposal to build a new road from Chakkaraparmbu to Infopark was put forward by RBDCK. The Corporation has also taken up work on extending the Seaport-Airport Road from near HMT junction to the international airport at Nedumbassery.
