The revenue district school youth festival was formally inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Food and Public Distribution K.V. Thomas in Muvattupuzha on Tuesday.

A colourful procession was held ahead of the inaugural function.

Band competition and literary contests marked the first day of the fest on Monday.

Dance events, the showpiece of the festival, and other competitions in upper primary, high school and higher secondary categories were held at 18 venues.

Folk dance, chavittunatakam, English skit, recitation, elocution, mimicry, mono act, classical music, light music, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Kathakali were among the competitions held on the first day.

The band competition, which set the tone for the four-day fest, was held on the campus of Muvattupuzha Model School.

The team from Thrikkakara Mary Matha English Medium Higher Secondary School emerged winners in the higher secondary school category by coming up with the perfect tune to match their synchronized movements.

St. Jude’s English Medium High School, Karanakkodam, won the first prize in the high school category.

All teams that participated in the competition tried to bring in accuracy and novelty in all the aspects of the competition including marching, formation, dress code and drum solo.

All three teams that participated in the higher secondary category were found eligible for A grade. The judges, however, found the performance of a few teams in the high school category repetitive, and only three teams, out of five, were awarded A grade.

A variety of issues ranging from Aam Aadmi to Jasmine Revolution emerged subjects in the painting competition. Story writing, essay and poetry were among the literary competitions held.
