‘Kochi metro will stick to deadline’

May 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated April 03, 2016 12:55 am IST - KOCHI:

With 75 per cent (civil) works in the Aluva-Palarivattom corridor completed, Kochi Metro’s reach one (Aluva to Maharaja’s College Ground) will be commissioned as scheduled by the June 2016 deadline, DMRC’s Principal Advisor E. Sreedharan.

Land acquisition delays have largely been overcome and slowdown in civil works in the 18-km stretch due to shortage of labour is being addressed, Mr. Sreedharan said.

He added that the June 2016 deadline was fixed as per Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s request, though the contract between DMRC and Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is to complete the 25-km metro corridor (up to Pettah) by June 2017. Much work can be done in the one full year left for commissioning the project.

“Work related to laying rails over the viaduct will begin in June, while work on metro stations will be over by December. Coaches will begin arriving from December and it will take a month to assemble them. Trial runs will begin from January-February 2016.”

Earlier in the day, Mr Sreedharan inspected work sites in the Aluva-Vyttila corridor where civil works are underway.

He visited metro’s coach-maintenance yard at Muttom near Aluva and held discussions with DMRC officials at the agency’s Kochi project office.

Land acquisition delays have largely been overcome, says DMRC’s principal advisor

E. Sreedharan.
