The Kochi Metro Rail project requires 40.409 hectares of land, including for pay-and-park lots.
The requirement is over eight hectares more than the estimate in the detailed project report.
Big parking lots
The terminal stations at Aluva and Pettah and the stations at Kalamassery, Edappally and Kaloor will have big parking lots.
These details were mentioned in a report submitted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL) based on a joint inspection a week ago of the metro alignment and the station sites.
The total land required for the 22 stations is 9.4 hectares, which includes the area required for parking lots.
For the additional parking envisaged at major stations, 2.79 hectares of land will be used, says a press release issued by the KMRL.
Previous estimate
The coach depot at Muttom, meant for the maintenance and repair of rolling stock, requires 23.6 hectares of land. It was earlier estimated at 17 hectares.
“We are going ahead with the preparations at a fast pace to avoid any delay in implementing the project.
Next step
“The next step is taking possession of the land so that we can start the metro’s work,” Elias George, Managing Director, KMRL, said.
