Public support is building up for the demand for entrusting the Kochi metro work to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and E. Sreedharan, its principal advisor.
A meeting held at the residence of V.R. Krishna Iyer, former Supreme Court judge, decided to stage a ‘human metro’ on October 27 to raise the demand for timely completion of Kochi metro project.
The ‘human metro’ will be organised from Aluva Pulinchode and Tripunithura Pettah – the two points between which the Kochi Metro operates.
Explaining the protest, P. Rajeev, MP, said that a continuous alert was required till the a Memorandum of Understanding was signed.
Representatives of various organisations like Kerala Merchants’ Union, Vayapari Vyavasayi Samiti, Credai, Graduates Engineers’ Association, Ernakulam District Residents Associations’ Apex Council, Residents Apex Council, Hotel and Bar Association, Save Kerala Movement, International Media Centre, Fine Arts Society, Ernakulam Public Library, Maharaja’s Old Students Association, All India Lawyers’ Union, Angamali Merchants Association, AIBEA, BEFI, CITU and AITUC attended the meeting.
In another effort to garner support for Kochi Metro, Mayor Tony Chammany launched a website (www.supportkochimetro.in) on Wednesday.
The website has been launched for the public to express their support for the demand for DMRC taking up the Kochi Metro project under the guidance of Mr. Sreedharan, said Mr. Chammany.
The civic body is expecting to raise support of nearly 10 lakh people and their opinion will be forwarded to the Prime Minister and Union Minister for Urban Affairs. The efforts need to be kept up till the next director board meeting of DMRC to be held on November 15, said Mr. Chammany.
