The district administration is galloping towards the target of reviving 100 ponds in 50 days taken up with the objective of converting water bodies into reservoirs of fresh water in the wake of unprecedented drought experienced by the district.
After cleaning up 13 ponds across the district on Saturday, volunteers revived another 16 on Sunday.
District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla visited some of the spots and oversaw the cleaning work.
With the revival of 29 ponds this weekend, the district administration has managed to clean up 47 ponds in 23 days since the campaign was launched on April 1.
Going at this rate, the district administration is confident of achieving the target well on time, if not before.
Ponds at Amballoor, Edathala, Eloor, Kalady, Kalamassery, Kunnthunadu, Mookkannoor, Thiruvaniyoor, Thuravoor, and Thrikkakara were cleaned on Sunday.
Volunteers of Haritha Kerala Mission, Anbodu Kochi, Nehru Yuva Kendra, local bodies, Kudumbasree, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, National Service Scheme volunteers, students of Morning Star Home Science College, Angamaly, SCMS College of Engineering, Karukutty, Dr. Padiyar Memorial Homeo College, Chottanikkara, St. Teresa’s College, and members of arts and sports clubs participated in the campaign. Fire and rescue department also assisted the volunteers in cleaning ponds with depth.
Volunteers were given food and water by Kudumbasree.
