Actor Kalpana on Friday denied reports that she had joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Speculations were rife about her joining the AAP after she supported the candidature of K.M. Noordeen, the party’s candidate for the Chalakudy Parliamentary seat, at a meeting held as part of the campaign on Monday.

Reports had also quoted her saying that she was in Chalakudy not to support actor Innocent, the LDF independent candidate.

At a press meet here, Ms. Kalpana accused Jose Maveli, the chairman of Janaseva Sisubhavan, of misleading her by not mentioning earlier that it was an election meeting in favour of the AAP candidate. The actor, an active supporter of the organisation working towards the protection of street children, said Mr. Maveli had asked her to speak a few words in favour of the organisation at the meeting.

She also rejected rumours that the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes had forced her to issue a clarification about her political stance. But Ms. Kalpana admitted that she would have to give an explanation on her presence at the AAP candidates’ campaign at the general body meeting of AMMA.

Ms. Kalpana said she would campaign for Mr. Innocent in Chalakudy. The actor said she would support actors who contest elections irrespective of their political affiliations.
