Kakkoor Kaalavayal, an agricultural and cultural festival organised by the Thirumarady panchayat near Piravom, concluded here on Saturday with the traditional Maramadi competition, in which competitors race their bullocks through muddy paddy fields in a show of raw strength and skills.
The last day the five-day festival also saw a beauty competition for bulls and a dog show. The four-day festivities were inaugurated by the vice-captain of Indian hockey team S.R. Sreejesh and a bike race was part of the opening day’s shows.
Kaalavayal is a traditional harvest festival of the farmers in Kakkoor. The most exciting event of the festival is Maramadi.
Ernakulam District Panchayat president Eldhos Kunnappillil was the chief guest at the concluding day’s programme.
