The junior doctors, house surgeons and students of postgraduate and undergraduate courses at the Government Medical College, Ernakulam, on Tuesday joined in the strike called by the Kerala Medicos Joint Action Council against the government’s order raising the age of retirement of doctors in the health services from 56 years to 60 and that of faculty members in medical colleges from 60 years to 62.

The junior doctors and students picketed the academic block at the medical college as a mark of protest.

A statement issued by the representatives of the KMJAC said that the services in the casualty department, ICU, and labour room were excluded from the strike. The junior doctors began the strike at 9 a.m. and as part of the protest, the dummy of a junior doctor was hung from a rope.

The students and doctors also took out a march in front of the hospital. PG Association president Dr. Minhaj, House Surgeons Association president Dr. Justin, and Students Union secretary Sharat were among those who spoke.
