Temple Melsanti Kottampally Narayanan Namboodiri offered rice balls to Chettuva Kannan, the youngest elephant of the lot, at 9 a.m. to kick off the event.
As many as 63 elephants were fed at the annual ‘Anayoottu’ (feast for elephants) held at the Sree Vadakkunnatha Temple on Monday. Temple Melsanti Kottampally Narayanan Namboodiri offered rice balls to Chettuva Kannan, the youngest elephant of the lot, at 9 a.m. to kick off the event. About 500 kg of rice was cooked for the elephants. The pachyderms also polished off mountains of bananas, jaggery, honey, corn, pineapple and sugarcane. Thousands of people gathered at the Thekkinkad Maidan to watch the event. Barricades were erected at the maidan.
The Sree Vadakkunatha Kshetra Kshema Samithy, which organised the event, had insured the event for Rs.1 crore. Earlier, a team of 50 priests, led by Puliyannur Sankaranarayanan Namboodiri, performed ‘Ashtadravya Maha Ganapati Homam’.
