Jazeera from Kannur, who caught the public eye with her protest against the sand mining mafia, began a protest in front of the government children’s home at Kakkanad demanding that her three children be returned to the government shelter.
The Child Welfare Committee had rescued Jazeera’s children – aged 12, eight, and one – after they joined her in a sit-in protest in front of businessman Kochouseph Chittilappilly’s house and the Palaraviattom police station. The committee intervened following a complaint from a city resident that Jazeera was neglecting her children’s education and care. The CWC had first taken the children to the government home, later shifting them to an orphanage. Jazeera sat in protest before the home demanding that her children be brought back there and handed over to her. She told reporters that the government could not put the children in an orphanage when their mother wanted them back.
CWC officials said they could hand over the children only after they spoke to Jazeera. But the protestor was unwilling to appear before the committee and is yet to contact them.
