Members of the Syrian Orthodox Church on Sunday staged a protest in front of the Puthencruz police station alleging the police were not acting against those who attempted to assault one of their priests here on Sunday.

According to the protesters, members of the Syrian Jacobite Church on Sunday morning abused and attempted to physically assault Fr. John Moolamattom, who was leading the holy mass at the St. John’s Church in Kanniyattunirappu.

The dharna, which began in the evening, was led by Thomas Mar Athanasius Metropolitan and Yuhanon Mar Policarpos Metropolitan.

The police denied reports of the attack and maintained that the two factions picked up a verbal argument, which lasted some half an hour. Citing that they were yet to receive any complaints in this direction, he said the police were unable to register a case in the absence of a violent clash.
