The State government on Tuesday informed the Kerala High Court that earnest steps were being taken to ensure coordination between different departments and provide basic facilities to the islanders of Kadamakudy.
In an action taken report filed on a directive of the High Court, the State government said that the water supply scheme for the island would be partly commissioned soon. All the works except the overhead tank had been completed and the Kerala Water Authority was awaiting power connection. Once the power connection was established, islanders were expected to be provided water by April 15.
The proposed Moolampilly-Chathanad road would provide major connectivity to the mainland. The Kerala State Construction Corporation had been entrusted with the works.
The government had also accorded administrative sanction for the construction of Moolampilly-Pizhala bridge and its approach roads. The Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA) had formulated projects for widening Cheriamthuruth-Chennur-Pizhala road, and construction of Kothad-Chennur bridge. GIDA had allotted Rs.50 lakh for improvement of existing roads and an equal amount for housing projects.
The work for improvement of the PH centre at Pizhala had been awarded in 2014 with a mandate that its work should be completed in a year.
The government submitted that since most of the areas in Kadamakudy came under the Coastal Regulation Zone areas, building permits could not be granted.
The State had already requested the Centre to relax CRZ norms in the case of the island for constructing dwelling units. However, the Centre was not agreeable to the request.
A directive to submit the status report was issued when a writ petition filed by the Kerala Legal Services Authority came up for hearing.
