Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala on Monday directed Ernakulam Range inspector general of police (IG) M.R. Ajith Kumar to investigate the alleged custodial torture of a woman by Cheranalloor police.

Sources said the official had already begun a probe based on the direction, which came in the wake of a request from activists to entrust the investigation to a top police official. Leaders of the joint action council fighting for Leeba’s rights had met the Home Minister on Sunday. Leeba was taken into custody by the police on charge of stealing gold jewellery from a house where she worked. But the police failed to recover the gold.
