Idukki dam opened to the public

Idukki dam has been opened to the public as part of Onam and Tourism Week celebrations. An official of the Dam Monitoring Cell, Cheruthoni, said that the public would be allowed entry till September 25. Two boats were also made available to the tourists for a cruise in the reservoir, he said and added that withstanding heavy rain, an average of 400 to 500 persons were visiting the dam, which opens to public only during festival seasons and special occasions.

The water level in the Idukki reservoir reached 2,387 feet on Saturday compared to the 2,367.38 ft on the same day last year. The electricity production level at the Moolamattom power house has come down during the monsoon season. The rainfall recorded in the catchment area was 4 cm on Saturday and the water level reached 82 percent of the total storage capacity.
