September 30, 2011 07:48 pm | Updated 07:48 pm IST - KATTAPPANA:

Entry for the public to the Idukki dam has been extended till October 9 in the wake of the high turnout of visitors. Two boats will be available for tourists to have a cruise in the reservoir area.

The dam is open to the public only during the festival seasons and special occasions. Many tourists arrived at the dam this Onam season, said an official of the Dam Monitoring Cell at Cheruthoni.

The water level in the reservoir has fallen with a dry spell and high temperature prevailing in the area, the official said, adding that the water inflow through the Periyar had also declined. The water level on Friday was 2,397.94 ft against the 2,371.3 ft on the same day last year. It had reached nearly 10 ft below the full capacity of the reservoir.

The official also said that the production level at the Moolamattom power station was at a high and remained 11 million units on Friday.
