Ice-makers: will not water down quality

May 10, 2013 02:26 am | Updated 02:26 am IST - KOCHI:

Ice manufacturers are planning to take steps for installing water treatment plants during the trawl ban days in Kerala.

The annual trawl ban begins in Kerala on June 15.

The plant owners have demanded at least six months for installing the plants. “The companies installing treatment plants say they require at least 22 days for installing the treatment facilities,” said T.G. R Shenoy, State president of the organisation of the ice manufacturing units in Kerala.

Food Safety officials had slapped a fine of Rs. 10,000 each on 15 ice plants that were found using chemically contaminated water for making ice. The erring plants were also closed down. The Food Safety Act has prescribed the potable water quality parameters for the water used for making ice. The officials have also obtained undertakings from the plant owners stating that they would comply with the water quality standards.

A meeting of ice manufacturers will be held in Kochi for enforcing quality standards for water used by the plants. There would be follow-up checks, an official said.
