Willingdon Island, the quiet side of Kochi, was buzzing with activity on Sunday with nearly over 5,000 runners stomping its roads for the third IDBI Federal Life Insurance Spice Coast Marathon.

Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, who has a strong bond with the city with his memorable five-wicket haul at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium here and also as the co-owner of the very successful ISL team Kerala Blasters, was clearly impressed with the huge turnout.

Kerala has always been special for me

“Kerala has always been special for me, my connection with this city goes beyond cricket. It’s heartwarming to see such a huge turnout across age groups and race categories for the marathon,” said Tendulkar.

“This commitment towards health and fitness is exemplary. I am confident the city will continue to bat for good health and well-being in the future as well, and the participation will only keep increasing every year.”
