Braving the scorching sun, homemakers from five panchayats took out a protest march to the regional office of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation Ltd (Bevco) at Pettah on Monday demanding the closure of a Bevco outlet that has been functioning at Poothotta since 2005.

Housewives from Udayamperur, Chembu, Perumbalam, Edakkattuvayal, and Amballoor joined hands under the aegis of the ‘Vanitha Janakeeya Samara Samithi’ in their agitation.

The plight of women

The protest march taken out from the Gandhi Square at Pettah featured slogans that conveyed the plight of women who suffered due to alcoholism in society. The protesters said the Bevco outlet at Poothotta was strategically located near the bus stop and the boat jetty. The outlet is in the same building where a ration shop also functions, making life difficult for women and children coming to this shop as they often had to pass through the long queue in front of the Bevco outlet.

Youth affected

The Bevco outlet is also just a kilometre away from the SNDP education complex thus threatening to be a bad influence on the youth. The protesters also held a meeting after giving a memorandum to the regional manager of Bevco.
