The centenary of the birth of Mother Teresa was celebrated here on Thursday in a solemn manner at Nirmala Sisu Bhavan on SRM Road, which is among the 18 institutions under the Missionaries of Charity spread over Kerala and Karnataka and taking care of the abandoned and the orphaned.

The day's celebrations began with a solemn Mass by Sebastian Edyanthrath, Auxiliary Bishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly. The Bishop also lighted a candle that will burn throughout the year as part of the celebrations of Mother's birth centenary.

The Sisters at Sisu Bhavan, founded in 1979 and visited several times by Mother Teresa, also gave away 100 school kits and bags to poor children to mark the celebrations. They also gave away kits containing essential items to 400 poor families.

The Nirmala Sisu Bhavan has now 34 children, most of them orphans.
