KOCHI: Heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder on Thursday night threw power supply in the city and suburbs out of gear, besides leading to water-logging in several places.

The heavy downpour that began around 9.30 p.m. continued for more than an hour.

Officials at the customer care of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) said that power supply was widely disrupted after the functioning of sub stations in the city and Kalamassery was hit by rain and lightening. “Despite the limited staff strength, we are trying to restore major disruptions at the earliest. However, it will take time,” a customer care official said.

Fire and rescue services officials said traffic was disrupted at Kumbalam after a tree fell on the Aroor side of the Kumbalam bridge. A coconut tree fell on Poneth Road near Kaloor. It was promptly removed by fire safety officials.

A Delhi-Kochi-Thiruvananthapuram flight could not land at the Nedumbassery airport owing to heavy rain, and it left straight for Thiruvananthapuram.
