The Kerala High Court on Wednesday granted bail to a suspected Maoist arrested on the charge of burning a camp shed of the Forest Department inside the Silent Valley National Park in January.

He was arrested by the Agali police in May. The court passed the order on a petition field by Sundaran alias Unnikrishnan of Kumaramputhur, near Mannarkkad.

The court while granting bail observed that the prosecution had not filed a petition seeking to extend the time for completing the investigation before the court concerned. Therefore, the petitioner was entitled to default bail.

The court ordered that the petitioner be released on bail on his executing a bond for Rs.25,000 with two solvent sureties to the like sum before the court concerned. The prosecution case was that the petitioner led a team of Maoists that set the shed near the Anavayi upper tribal hamlet on fire. — Special Correspondent
