A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Monday directed City Police Commissioner K.G. James and the Principal of the Government Law College, Ernakulam, A. Saroja, to appear in person before the court on Tuesday in a contempt of court petition filed by a student in connection with recurring strikes by student organisations in the college. The Bench, comprising Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice K. Vinod Chandran, issued the order when the contempt of court petition filed by N. Prakashan, former private secretary to a High Court judge and now a student of the college, came up for hearing.

The petitioner alleged that the High Court had held that student unions had no right to set up their units on the college campus. Besides, it had prohibited politics on college campuses.

Despite the directives, student unions owing allegiance to various political parties were allowed to function on the campus and organise strikes.
