HC raps Senkumar

March 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - KOCHI:

The Kerala High Court on Thursday rapped Director General of Police (DGP) T.P. Senkumar for his remarks on the alleged discrimination shown by the police while acting against actor Kalabhavan Mani in a case.

“It is a pity that as a responsible police officer he still has the view that the police is discriminating against persons of higher and lower strata of society. Either he will have to stop his work or see that such discrimination does not happen in the force,” Justice Kemal Pasha said in his judgement.

Plea dismissed

The court issued the order while dismissing a petition by Mr. Senkumar seeking to expunge all the adverse remarks made against him earlier.

If such a statement is made by a person of this stature, it should be viewed seriously.

A responsible police officer was not expected to make such a statement in public regarding a pending case. In such a case, the petitioners were justified in seeking an investigation by an independent agency, the judgement said.

If the police were ‘discriminating against one person, it is the fault of the police and not the system as such. The speech by the petitioner clearly expresses his opinion.’

If the police were ‘resorting to such actions, it is a fault that is being committed by the police’ for which the petitioner was also responsible, the court said.
