Guru Nanak's birth anniversary, known as Guru Purab, was celebrated in the city by the Sikh community with much fervour on Thursday. Over a thousand people visited the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara in Thevara to offer prayers and take part in the festivities and the community lunch (langar) organised by the community.

Prabhat pheries or morning processions singing devotional hymns were held from last Friday onwards till Tuesday. Reading of Guru Granth Sahib was taken up on Tuesday and it concluded on Thursday morning after which Kirtan Jatha was held by a team from Haryana.

Many people from the community from Ernakulam district came over to participate in the festivities along with those from neighbouring districts who had reached here, said Bunty Singh, the public relations officer of the Gurdwara. There was good participation from the families at the Naval Base, he added.
