The Ernakulam district administration has implemented green protocol in and around the Malayattoor Kurishumudi, an international pilgrim centre.

₹10,000 fine

According to District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla, a fine of up to ₹10,000 would be imposed on those found discarding plastic materials, among others, during the pilgrimage season. The annual festival at the St. Thomas Church, Malayattoor, began on March 10 and will conclude by April 10. Hundreds of pilgrims from across the State have started descending on the pilgrimage centre.

“There is a ban on tins, cans, plastic bottles and all other materials which are not easily decomposable. Sealed or unsealed containers, plastic disposables and carry bags too can’t be taken. The ban is as per the Kerala Police Act 1980. The initiative was taken after the piling of plastic and food material package waste at the pilgrim centre came to the notice of the district authorities. The issue also figured prominently in the February 18 meet attended by elected representatives of the region,” a statement said.

Meanwhile, steps have been taken to ensure provision of drinking water and food through nature-friendly outlets.
