Graft in Cusat: panel to probe allegations

February 28, 2012 11:38 am | Updated 11:38 am IST - KOCHI:

A Syndicate meeting of the Cochin University of Science and Technology held here on Monday decided to constitute a sub-committee to probe the alleged irregularities in relieving B. Madhusoodanakurup, former Director of its School of Industrial Fisheries, to take up the post of the Vice-Chancellor of Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences.

The decision was taken after the Finance Department found that Dr. Kurup had committed alleged financial irregularities while serving as the Director of School of Industrial Fisheries.

The inspection wing of the department had also recommended action against Vice-Chancellor Ramachandran Thekkedath, and former Registrar N. Chandramohanakumar for ignoring the financial irregularities committed by Dr. Kurup while relieving him from the post of the Director of School of Industrial Fisheries.

The Syndicate meeting witnessed some heated exchanges when a section of its members questioned the Vice-Chancellor's failure in reporting the alleged irregularities against Dr. Kurup before the Syndicate. Dr. Thekkedath pointed out that he had not received any official direction in this regard from the Finance Department.

The meeting decided to constitute a sub-committee led by Syndicate member Lopus Mathew (convener) and M. Bhasi, K. A. Zakkariya, and Sunny P. Jose as members to conduct a probe on the recommendations made by the Finance Department against Dr. Kurup. The Syndicate appointed two sub-committees to recommend steps to improve the internal revenue of the varsity in view of serious financial crisis.
