Gold smuggling racket suspected

March 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - KOCHI:

The probe into the seizure of 8 kg of gold from a passenger at the Cochin airport has pointed to the involvement of a Dubai-based gold smuggling racket that lures youngsters for smuggling in gold by offering up to Rs.50,000 for each successful attempt.

According to officials of the Department of Revenue Intelligence, Sainuddin Jamal, the person arrested in this connection, was a carrier and he admitted to have smuggled in 4 kg of gold on previous two occasions in December and January. He was given Rs 25,000 each on both the occasions. He, however, had no idea for whom the yellow metal was being smuggled in. — Staff Reporter
