The Ernakulam Additonal Chief Judicial Magistrate (Economic Offences) Court here on Saturday denied bail to Faiz, accused of aiding smuggling of gold through the Cochin international airport.

The court said that granting of bail to Faiz could adversely affect the investigation into the case.

The prosecution said that Faiz had confessed to aiding smuggling operations and conspiring with Customs officials to illegally bring in gold.

Counsel for the accused said the confession was taken forcibly under torture.

Faiz had earlier given a written complaint before the court that he was tortured in custody by Customs Deputy Commissioner S.A.S. Navas.

The court transferred the case to the Aluva Judicial First Class Magistrate Court. The court noted that the medical report made after examining Faiz did not find any external injuries.

The lesions on his skin may have been caused by allergies, the report noted.
