The Salim Rajan overbridge is a step closer to completion as a 340-tonne steel girder was placed over the bridge’s railway portion on Friday.

This girder, 46.80m long and 8.90m wide, does not have a middle span and is the longest one used in any railway overbridge in Kerala. The bridge, whic is located between the South and Pullepady bridges, would be opened to traffic by month-end, DMRC officials said.

The State government had handed over to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation the Rs 20-crore project, the Rs 70-crore project to rebuild and widen Ernakulam North overbridge and the widening of three major arterial roads in the city as part of Kochi Metro’s preparatory works. The widened North bridge will be opened to traffic by year-end.

Approach roads

Kochi Corporation is yet to widen the bridge’s approach road and curves near the KSRTC bus stand. It is feared that this would create traffic snarls near the stand and in Rajaji Road once the bridge is opened to vehicles.
