Aimed at diverting the youth from using psychedelic drugs, the Kerala Police in association with Student Police Cadets are launching a new campaign, ‘Yes to football, No To Drugs’. The event, to be launched in Kochi on October 4, aims to leverage the excitement of the upcoming FIFA Under-17 World Cup to draw youngsters away from drugs.
“In the first phase, it will be initiated in five districts falling under the Kochi range and based on the response it generates, it can be extended to other regions as well,” said P. Vijayan, Inspector General of Police, Kochi City. According to him, the seizure of huge volumes of narcotic substances from the region over the past few months led the police to adopt a new approach. “We have done much to check the supply, and now it’s time to attack it from the demand side,” said Mr. Vijayan.
The formal launch of the campaign will be held at Durbar Hall Ground at 7 a.m on Wednesday. Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, State Police Chief, Inspector General of Police (Kochi Range) and other prominent figures will be present. The event will begin with a walkathon and ball run through the city. It also comprises a goal scoring event, ‘Goal Varsham’, anti-drug pledge and painting competition.
