With just hours left for election to the post of vice chairman at Maradu municipality, scheduled for Thursday, both the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) have reserved their decisions over their respective candidates to the eleventh hour.
Though the area committee of the CPI(M) was convened on Wednesday, a decision over the candidate to be fielded was reserved for another round of meeting to be chaired by area committee secretary on Thursday at 9 a.m.
Mixed signals were emanating from the UDF camp on the eve of the election.
A District Congress Committee office-bearer said that an informal decision had been taken to field Jaffar Pappana, one of the two independent candidates who got elected after contesting the local body polls as Congress rebels, and that on getting elected he would occupy the post for the initial half of the remaining term while the other independent candidate Boban Nedumparambil will get the latter half.
However, DCC president T.J. Vinod confirmed that a final decision would be taken only on Thursday morning.
This is the third election to the post of vice chairman in Maradu in less than two years since the last local body polls.
