It was celebration time at Panampilly Nagar when the otherwise busy road was transformed into a free space on Sunday, observed as Car-free Day in the city.

With the new-found freedom on the road, people took part in a wide variety of arts, cultural and sports activities.

Between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., the road turned venue for flash mob, street plays, kite-flying, badminton, cycle rally, folk arts performance, aerobics and some awareness programmes.

The Car-free Day, which gave pedestrians, cyclists, children, the aged and the physically challenged a free way on the stretch from 9th Crossroad to 13th Crossroad, was jointly organised by the Kochi Corporation, Kochi Metro Rail Limited, Thrissur-based non-governmental organisation ESAF, Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Panampilly Nagar Welfare Association, Kochi City Police and Cochin Shipyard. Mayor Soumini Jain inaugurated the events at a function presided over by Jacob Samuel, director (Programmes), ESAF.

The organisers are planning to observe Car-free Day in Malappuram soon.
