The Higher Education Department has given its nod for giving the charge of chairman of the governing council of the autonomous Ernakulam Maharaja’s College to T. V. Francy, former Deputy Director of Department of Collegiate Education in Ernakulam.

The decision to allocate charge of the chairman of governing council to Prof. Francy was made on the recommendation made by the college authorities after P. K. Abdul Azis, the first chairman of the governing council, resigned from the post on April 25.

Prof. Francy was the former Principal of the college. He had also served the governing council as its first member secretary.

Senior officials of the Higher Education Department said that the file ratifying the proposal to give him charge of the chairman has been forwarded to P. K. Abdu Rabb, Minister for Education, for final approval.

The college authorities approached the Higher Education Department with the proposal to hand over the charge of the chairman to Prof. Francy considering his rich experience in implementing the autonomy plans of the college from its beginning.

Prof. Azis had resigned from the post after recording displeasure over the tardy progress in the implementation of projects and the failure of the council for timely implementation of various proposals.

Mr. Aziz noted in his resignation that he was “unable to appreciate the lack of timely and proper briefing and prompt follow up on autonomy related development of college facilities.”

The college authorities had denied the allegations raised by Prof. Azis while saying that the autonomy plans of the college were on track.

“We had always apprised him of the various steps being taken to roll out the autonomy roadmap,” the college authorities said.
